Excuses for calling in sick

November 2, 2008 · 3 Comments

Attached is an article from Career Builder listing excuses people have used to miss work.  Personally. I favor paid time off policies over separating sick from vacation.  If someone is not at work, they’re not at work.  What difference does it make?  Managers still have to cover for people who are not at work no matter what the reason.

Paid time off policies also instill trust between employer and employee.  Calling employees at home after they’ve called off usually leads to resentment and perceived lack of trust.  Managers who treat employees like adults see higher loyalty and lower turnover than the micromanaging tyrants who harrass people when they call off from work.

Occasionally there will be a bad apple or two who abuses attendance policies.  When this happens,  document the occurrences, communicate expectations with the employee, and if the behavior doesn’t change, fire him/her.  Fortunately, most employees are not abusive with time off and managers are better off leaving these employees alone.
